The rise of EV (electric vehicles) has rapidly transformed the Indian automobile industry. With encouragement from the government in the form of the PM eDrive Scheme and the urge to maintain a pollution-free environment, electric vehicles are in high demand. Also, they have become an integral part of the transportation system due to their contribution to reducing the carbon footprint.

    India's EV sales forecast

With the announcement of the Union Budget 2025-2026, the government is stepping up its efforts to support electric vehicles by significantly raising the automotive sector’s overall budget. It is nearly doubled (+74%) from ₹4,306.81 crores (US$ 495.28 million) in FY2024 to ₹7,484.61 crores (US$ 859.24 million) in FY2025.

India’s electric vehicle market delivered a landmark performance in FY2025–26. According to VAHAN portal registration data, total EV registrations surged across segments — electric two-wheelers (e2W) grew 21.8% to 1.40 million units in FY26 (up from 1.15 million in FY25), while electric four-wheelers (e4W) nearly doubled, surging 91.3% year-on-year to 1,93,633 units. Monthly EV registrations hit a record 2,82,358 units in March 2026, with April 2026 recording 2,39,014 units, reflecting sustained momentum.

On the policy front, the Union Budget 2026–27 earmarked ₹1,500 crore for the PM E-DRIVE (Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement) scheme, continuing the government’s push to accelerate EV adoption and strengthen charging infrastructure — replacing the now-wound-down FAME-II programme.

The broad automotive sector budget in FY25 had already nearly doubled (+74%) from ₹4,306.81 crore in FY24 to ₹7,484.61 crore in FY25.

Furthermore, the numerous advantages of owning an EV are encouraging more people to follow this environmentally friendly trend. Crucial elements such as improvements in EV charging infrastructure, government incentives, and the expansion of EV charging stations also contribute to the trend’s favourability.

Key Trends Shaping the EV Sector in 2025

Key Trends Shaping the EV Sector in 2025

The electric vehicle (EV) sector in 2025 is undergoing transformative changes driven by technological, policy, and market forces. Key trends include:

    1. Accelerated EV Adoption

Global EV sales are projected to grow at a mid-teens percentage rate, with China leading the market and, for the first time, expecting EV sales to surpass those of internal combustion engine vehicles. This surge is supported by consumer demand for cleaner transportation and government incentives.

    1. Expansion of EV Model Lineups

Automakers are rapidly increasing the variety of EV models, catering to diverse consumer preferences. This includes everything from affordable compact cars to luxury SUVs, making EVs more accessible and appealing to a broader audience.

    1. Advancements in Battery Technology

Innovations such as solid-state batteries and ultra-fast charging extend driving ranges and reduce charging times. This helps address major barriers to adoption and improve overall vehicle performance.

    1. Growth of Charging Infrastructure

Significant investments are being made in expanding public and private charging networks, particularly in Europe. New regulations require charging points every 60 km along major routes, alleviating range anxiety and supporting mass adoption.

    1. Policy and Regulatory Developments

Governments worldwide are ramping up pro-EV incentives, implementing stricter emissions mandates, and introducing increased vehicle taxes on petrol and diesel cars to accelerate the shift to electric mobility.

These trends collectively signal a pivotal year for the EV industry, marked by technological maturity, policy support, and mainstream market acceptance

The Road Ahead for India’s EV Market

Top 6 Indian Auto Brands in 2023

India’s electric vehicle (EV) market is growing rapidly, with over 20 lakh (2 million) EVs sold in FY2025. Here are some key highlights:

    • A 15.6% year-on-year increase brings cumulative sales to 61.66 lakh units by March 2025.
    • Two-wheelers dominate the segment, accounting for more than 50% of sales, followed by electric three-wheelers at 36%, and four-wheelers at 6%.
    • The top five states- Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Bihar- collectively contributed nearly half of the nation’s annual EV sales.
    • In April 2025 alone, sales of EVs hit a record 12,330 units, marking a 58% year-on-year jump.
    • Tata Motors led the four-wheeler segment with a 36% market share, although its sales dipped 14% year-on-year, while MG Motor and Mahindra posted triple-digit growth.
    • The production of battery-powered passenger vehicles is projected to soar by 140% in 2025, reaching around 301,400 units, about 6% of the total passenger vehicle output.

Despite impressive gains, challenges remain. EV penetration must accelerate to meet the government’s ambitious 30% market share target by 2030. Policy uncertainties and the exclusion of passenger vehicles from some subsidy schemes could slow momentum. However, continued government support and expanding infrastructure signal a promising future for India’s EV ecosystem.

With this, the EV companies require a robust API to manage their financial transactions and banking needs. To address such needs, Decentro offers a wide range of payment and banking APIs. With our Professional Verification API, firms can verify the details of companies and other entities they are dealing with to avoid fraudulent activities and adhere to regulatory requirements.

Furthermore, they can leverage the MultiCollect API for seamless payment collection from different companies simultaneously.
